Challenges

The CDC, a U.S. health protection agency, estimates that in the U.S. alone around 99,000 people die of infections caused by resistant germs every year. In Germany, at least 15,000 people die every year after contracting HAI’s hospital acquired infections. The dark figures are high. The German Society of Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) even estimates as many as 40,000 deaths per year.

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), multiresistant gram-negative bacteria and ESBL bacteria are widespread germs which can cause wound infections and inflammations in humans and are resistant to antibiotics. The additional costs of a case of an MRSA infection in a hospital are at least € 13,725 (estimate based on Die Zeit newspaper, 30.05.2015).
